Brother Oliver Oversteps His Bounds

My Disciples,

I am so mad at Brother Oliver right now!  I can’t believe what he did earlier today.  Those of you who know Me well, know that when I am feeling especially depressed about the state of felinekind I like to soothe Myself by licking My favorite catnip-filled toy.  It is shaped like a banana and, although I hate real bananas, it is the perfect shape for Me to hold onto.  The fuzzy surface makes a very satisfying and loud scraping noise against My rough tongue, and the delicious catnip taste is irresistible.

Otis laying on an orange pillow licking a banana toy.

I usually like to taste the banana toy while I am laying on My Sacred Orange Pillow of Enlightenment.

This morning after breakfast I was feeling a little depressed, so I decided to do a little self-soothing with the catnip banana.  Instead of doing this in My usual spot on the Sacred Orange Pillow of Enlightenment, I was just laying in the middle of the floor.

Otis is licking a catnip banana on the floor.

Although I usually sooth Myself on My pillow, this morning I was doing so on the floor.

Brother Oliver approached Me and told Me he was concerned that I was spending a little too much time self-soothing with the catnip banana.  He said that he thought I might be developing a problem.  I told him that I had no problem.  I said that the catnip banana helps Me take the edge off of My worries and that I could stop licking it any time I want.  Brother Oliver became agitated and told me that I should stop to prove that I was telling the truth.  When I told him I didn’t want too he pounced on Me and took the banana away!

Brother Oliver has Otis pinned on the floor. A catnip banana is nearby.

Brother Oliver pounced on Me and took the catnip banana away!

I don’t know what got into Brother Oliver, but he really overstepped his bounds.  I need My catnip banana to carry on when times get tough.  I don’t know why he thinks that is a problem, but he may have to be reprimanded for the forceful way he treated Me.  For now though, he has hidden the banana, and I don’t want to punish him until I can safely retrieve it.  I will have to make due with my emergency backup toy until then.

Otis sits on a cat tree with a catnip fish and a dissatisfied look.

My emergency backup toy just isn't as good as the banana.

My emergency backup toy is a catnip fish.  It’s alright, but it just isn’t as satisfying as the banana.  I will continue to use it for now, but I hope that Brother Oliver will eventually come to his senses and give me back My banana.  I don’t have a problem.  I know he will see this in time.

So Sayeth Otis

  1. Tough love, big O. Repeat after me: Hi. My name is Otis. I am a Nip-O-Holic.

  2. Brother Oliver needs to be taken out.

    ‘Nuff said.

    😉

    Fun post!

  3. 🙂 It’s fun to play out what you’re animals are up too, isn’t it? Very cute!

  4. Milly

This is the best blog I’ve ever read in my life. Consider me a convert to the Cult.

  5. Very funny! Great photos. Makes me wonder what antics play out between my dogs when I’m not around.

  6. Love it! Otis looks like my Milo!

  7. I love your cat cult leader point of view. Cats do seem a bit religious at times. In my family, we call sometimes call our cats priestess and goddess.

  8. Margie

It is interesting how Tabby cats like these all look so similar. I had one (it died a few years ago), and I often run into it’s “twin” in places all over the world!

  9. The Compulsive Writer

“emergency backup toy” love that. Can’t believe Sandy the dog hasn’t posted on your blog!

  10. Love his dissapointed look with the emergency back up.
    Thanks!

  11. Hail Otis! And Brother Oliver- give him back his banana!!

  12. katiefoutz

Awesome. Congrats on Freshly Pressed (which is how I stumbled upon your blog), Otis. I’m a kitty owner — ahem, guardian — and totally get why you capitalize personal pronouns when you write about yourself.

Love it!!!!!!! I am not the only crazy one posting imaginary animal/ bird stories on my blog.
Adorable!!! I hope Otis gets the banana catnip back!

  15. I had to check this post out because I couldn’t believe how Otis’ profile looks just like my kitty, Simon.
I am continuously amazed by the quirks of cats. They certainly keep things interesting!

  16. Oh, Master Otis!
Forgive me for not genuflecting sooner, but I just found you Freshly Pressed. I shall not shirk my devotionals to you heretofore.

  17. Hilarious blog, poor cat.. I hope he gets the banana back

  18. golfharp

I LOVE this post. Thanks for sharing! Great sense of humor.

  19. This blog is great. I love cats, and I love the pictures. Great work!

  20. We should all have Pillows of Enlightenment, I think.

I am laughing my ass off at Otis and Brother Oliver, but even more so at the catnip banana and the Sacred Orange Pillow of Enlightenment. If you knew how infrequently I click on a link within a blog entry — well, suffice it say I’ve done it maybe a handful of times, yet I read the entry on the “SOPE” immediately, so as to understand Otis’ frame of mind – so difficult for us puny, human brained “Guardians”. Imagine my delight when I read that entry and got a separate story about the gift left behind that Otis was able to enjoy — really, this blog was 2-2-2 fabulous insight-into-cat-stories in one!

I have 3 cats and Otis’ unique ability to write about the inner workings of the cat mind in a way we humans can understand is beneficial to me and my cats, as well as cats and their guardians the world over. I smile at his contribution to interspecies relations. Bravo for making Freshly Pressed, Otis!

  23. Otis has quite the personality I think brother Oliver just might be a tad bit jealous…I mean think about it; he doesn’t have his own blog! much less a banana. Maybe he thinks you just get too much satisfaction…maybe he feels a little like Mick Jagger [wink].

  24. Great post to read. Congrats!

  25. katblogger

Adorable. It’s funny – brother Otis looks identical to my (female) cat.

  26. Love it!

My cats are just as crazy… For the past two days, I’ve woken up with cat toys under/beside me in my bed. Apparently Phoenix thinks she has to bribe me to pet her. Or, she’s sure I’ll protect her toys from the others.

Whatever the reason, waking up to a mouse in my bed, even a fake one, isn’t exactly good times…

  27. You poor kitty… missing out on your catnip. I have a patch of fresh grown catnip in my backyard. Too bad you aren’t my neighbor… I’d share.

  28. Love your cats! And you’ve done a great job in getting that “Cat’s Royal Attitude” into your post. 🙂

  29. Wow! My cat looks just like Otis! Crazy.

  30. Brother Oliver is probably in it for the publicity, let’s not lie. ;P

  32. Oh, Otis…my little Spooky girl thinks you’re pretty darn cute (she would tell you this herself, but she’s a little shy)…she said she’ll be glad to share her Purple Toy with you until Oliver gives you your banana back (or longer, if you so desire).

  33. Brother Oliver probably secretly cuts his tail with a specially sharpened claw to “self sooth” his own “edge” away. Maybe you can catch him in the act?

    What a wonderful blog!!!!

  34. Very funny! Cats are so idiosyncratic and fun to watch. Congrats on Freshly Pressed.

  35. Bahahaha!! I love this!

  36. I have to say I came across this on freshly pressed and at first thought, how strange…but after reading several of your posts I am hooked-the writing and the photos are precious! I have 2 cats myself so I totally appreciate Otis and his madcap brothers.

  37. Looks like a CATastrophic intervention…

    Congrats of Freshly pressed!

  38. I LOVE IT!! I needed a good laugh today. Thank you so much!

  39. Otis reminds me of my dearly-departed Feisty (he of the cinnamon-colored nose). Glad I discovered this cult of all-things cat.

  40. Kristi

this made me think of my kitten midnight and my older cat trouble. they’re always attacking each other and playing around. Trouble’s favorite thing is to hide all the toys so midnight can’t use them.

  41. I’ve a cat with the same banana fetish, and the same fish. Only thing missing is the pillow of enlightnement. Have to hid your blog from the cats before they get any ideas.

  42. cc

Okay, I’ll admit it–I’m addicted to wireless mice!

  43. Looks like Brother Oliver better break out da banana right quick! Otis got trouble brewin’ in those eyes….

Too funny – Immediately sent this on to Super Model’s guardian cuz she’ll love it, too 🙂

  44. Adorable. It’s funny – brother Otis looks identical to my (female) cat.

  45. I didn’t know Otis was a cat for the first paragraph. Needless-to-say I thought you were a really creepy human.
Absolutely hilarious! I cant wait to read more of Otis’s adventures.

I love the antics, insights and pictures of these two very superior beings.

I am privileged to be the devoted servant and acolyte to 5 Priestesses (Daisy, Mumia, Krishna, Poppsy and Sammie) and one Priest (Henry).

As someone once said, there are no ordinary cats. Long may this blog educate the human race and promote the cause of Felinekind. xx 🙂

  47. Another excellent post thanks for sharing! I enjoy reading your blog very much. Feel free to stop by Easy Lifestyles sometime

  48. Aw. Really cute post. Congrats on Freshly Pressed.

  49. Colin L Beadon

Ah well. We have two the split of Otis, Mini Minerva and Minzi Moo. Then we’ve Cian, a tiger red, and Kaylie, a white with two red patches. Plus three Jack Russell. The cats and dogs go off and hunt together, and all come home drooping wet, imploring to be dried from the rain. They really are a most lovable but demanding team. Not many rats, mice, or lizards, around this old plantation home surrounded by sugar land, huge ficus trees, and sweet island air. So Otis would be in paradise.

  50. What a CATastrophe!
I think you should meet my Kuluu and Kittie… 😉

  51. ryoko861

OMG, Brother Oliver looks like my Tigger!! And Tigger was always bothering my other cat (she died recently and Tigger is SO out of sorts-no one to bother now!). Must be a tabby thing.

Great post! Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!

  52. Why can’t our political leaders ensure a catnip banana for everyone?!

  53. THIS IS ADORABLE! :0)

    It’s a good thing I’m a cat lover! ^_^

  57. oo i love your post …..keep it up

  58. Funny! 🙂 I hope Otis finds the banana but that a war does not ensue between him and his brother. They got good names: Otis and Oliver.
