About

Otis poses in soft light with a very serious look on his face.

Leader Otis

The Cult of Otis is a spiritual movement dedicated to the idea that all domestic cats should be kept happy, healthy and safely confined. The cult was founded by Leader Otis with support from His High Priests, Brothers Henry and Oliver. Leader Otis passed on October 28, 2013, but the movement he started lives on.

Today, Disciples of Otis around the world are helping to spread The Good Word.

Join us in our crusade and protect cats by adopting a dogma!

  2. Although Otis might eat Boo-zilla, I feel their message may be the same…..
good luck with the banana. We don’t have any problems, either. Fortunately.

    Dear Otis,

I want you to know you are an inspiration to all of us Guardians and a true leader to my 2 cats Schmiley and Lola. In one of your future blogs, could you address the issue of overfeeding cats (particularly with handfuls of cat treats!)? I worry that one of my cats is getting very obese, and I know it will shorten his life span. I want him around as long as possible, and if you discuss this, perhaps my husband will listen to You, because he won’t listen to me!
I’m purring for you Otis for a long life and much happiness.

    Linda

    • Linda, I too was once tending toward the portly side of the kitty scale. During a visit to The Bad Place, the veterinarian told the Guardians that heavy kitties are at much higher risk of kidney problems, diabetes and a bunch of other health issues. I don’t know if I understood what he was saying enough to write an article about it, but you can definitely tell your husband that chubby kitties are not likely to live as long as svelte kitties!

I thought the Guardians of Otis might appreciate a touching poem I was given from my local animal rescue folks. I had posted it here over a year ago, and just ran across it. Hankie alert.

  6. Guardians, I was wondering what breed of cat the leader is?

    • Joshua, I asked the Guardians what breed I am and they say that they’re not entirely sure. They said that My father, a feral named Big Boy, was a domestic longhair with bulls-eye style tabby markings. My mother, a feral named MJ, was a domestic shorthair with gray tabby markings. I guess maybe I am a domestic mediumhair then?

Hi Otis and the Gang. I have found you to be a loving household of cats and an inspiration and for that reason I have nominated you for the Liebster award. Sorry the image does not appear, but you can find it on my page.

I have nominated you for the Liebster award. The Liebster award is given to up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 readers/followers.
‘Liebster’ in German means – dearest, sweetest, kindest, beloved….and all the nice words you can think of .
So here are the rules for this award:
    1. Thank the blog that has given you the award.
    2. State 11 random facts about yourself.
    3. Answer the questions that the tagger set for you.
    4. Choose 11 people and link them in your post.
    5. Create 11 questions for the people you’ve tagged to answer
    6. Go to their page and tell them.
    The Eleven Questions:
    1. Are you a cat, dog or other person?
    2. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
    3. Best childhood memory?
    4. What is your favorite place to sit back and ponder life?
    5. If you could go back in time and place where would you go and why?
    6. What writers have inspired you?
    7. If you couldn’t do what you are currently doing, what would you like to do or be?
    8. What tastes better with ketchup on it?
    9. What is your favorite color?
    10. Where is the best vacation spot?
    11. Who fills your life with joy?

  24. I’ve drafted a blog post about, and with links to, the Cult of Otis. Would you like to read it before I post it? If so, please let me know where I can send the Word doc. Thanks! Love what you’re doing here.

  25. I am thoroughly enjoying your Blog Leader Otis and all the Brothers. You know what would be really cool? If you did a Q&A session for your fur followers. I know, as a fairly new guardian of only 3 years to my Snickers the Cat Not the Candy (his full name), I have many questions about what he is thinking and who else would know better than the Leader Otis and gang!
    It’s just a suggestion 

  26. Joy

    Hi Leader Otis,
We are getting a kitten tonight, if all goes well, and we have a little birdie for it. Since your Guardians are good handlers of the birdie, we were wondering if you could give us some tips on a good way to handle the bird. Thanks!

  27. Waiting for a button to add you to my “what I read” list. 🙂 Love it! My kitties are jealous they don’t have their own blog.

  28. I’ve nominated you for a Liebster Award! Take a look at my latest post to read all about it!

  29. You should consider having links to your projects (Cookie Hot House, Toastitron, Snuggle Shack, etc) with a standing link on the front page of the blog to make it easy for Guardians and friends of those in Limbo to find ideas to help. I am sure Otis’ spirit is purring as he sees you carry on his work and message through the blog.

  30. I love your blog and have nominated it for the Sunshine Award. Learn more at

  32. Dear Brothers Henry and Oliver, I can get behind worshipping the dearly departed Leader Otis. However, I have some reservations about adopting any sort of “dog”ma. I already live with three furry beasts and cannot fathom having any more. Otherwise, I’m behind you 1000%. Thank you, Your Loyal Follower, Carol.
