This morning I heard the Guardians making a bunch of noise on the stairs that lead down to the basement. At first I thought that maybe one of them had fallen down the stairs again like he did earlier in the week. I went to investigate and found that it was actually the other, less clumsy Guardian that was making all the noise. She was busy peeling off the top layer of the stairs, and it looked to Me like she might be planning to completely remove the entire staircase! This was unacceptable. Without stairs, how would we get downstairs? Were we supposed to only stay upstairs from now on? And would it even be upstairs if there were no stairs!?
I called out to Brothers Henry and Oliver to come and help Me figure out this dilemma. They came running and were just as disturbed as I was by what they saw.
Thinking quickly, Brother Oliver ran down the stairs and sat in the middle of the staircase. He looked the Guardian directly in the eye, trying to make her see that this stair removal was not kitty-approved.
Unfortunately, the message did not seem to get through. Instead of ceasing her work on the stairs, the Guardian picked Brother Oliver up and deposited him at the top of the staircase. She then put up a gate that prevented The Brothers and I from accessing the stairs. To our surprise though, she pulled out a paint brush and started painting the staircase. She wasn’t destroying them, she was improving them! She even put some sort of rough texture on them to make them less slippery.
After seeing what the Guardian was really doing, we realized that she was actually trying to make the stairs safer so no one falls on them again. So what started out as Save the Stairs Sunday really turned out to be Safety Stairs Sunday. We all breathed a sigh of relief and had a celebratory snack. We then retired to the living room for a nap, secure in the knowledge that there would still be a downstairs and an upstairs when we awoke.
