Thomas Knew About the Wiener Dog

Disciples of Otis,

Brother Oliver here. After Brother Henry left to go find Thomas, I stayed behind to try to hide the wiener dog scratcher as I was asked. After several minutes passed though, I had to desert my post briefly to take care of some urgent business at the litter box. I’m ashamed to say I might have waited a little too long… Anyway when I returned to the living room I was shocked to find Thomas sitting on top of the wiener dog scratcher giving himself a bath!

The Way of the Dragon… Belly

My Disciples,

After making amends to Thomas for My unprovoked tail attack, and regaining his trust, I decided that I should try to right another wrong. A few weeks back I tried to coach Thomas in the ways of the Catlympians. It didn’t go so well. I knew I could do better, so yesterday I gave it another try. After playing for awhile, I could tell that Thomas really had a good handle on the fundamentals, so I decided to tutor him in some advanced techniques. And what better way to start than with My own signature move that I call Dragon Belly?

I told Thomas to watch closely as I prepared to assume the position. As the toy handler made a pass with a simulated mouse, I began to roll over onto My back while saying, “See Thomas? You need to rotate your torso thusly, starting with your forelimbs, but be careful, it is easy to over-rotate and end up doing a full roll. If you lead with your forelegs though, your hind legs will follow.”

I told Thomas to rotate his forelegs first, and that his hind legs would follow.

Trying To Train Thomas

My Disciples,

I’m so embarrassed. Earlier today, Brother Henry and I were hanging out in Kitty Valhalla with Thomas. We were trying to figure out what we should do when Thomas asked, “Are the Catlympics still happening this fall?” When I told him they were he said, “Well, since I’m no longer out in Limbo with Mama Cat, how will I be able to train?”

As we were lounging in Valhalla trying to come up with something fun to do, Thomas asked about Catlympic training.

Training the Inner Circle Part III- Act

My Disciples,

When we last left off, our training session was moving on to step 3 of Mama Cat’s training regimen. If you recall, Mama Cat’s mantra is “Watch, anticipate, act.” Brother Henry and I had practiced our watching and anticipating while Brother Oliver seemed to think he didn’t need to bother with step 2. I decided that Brother Henry should go first so Brother Oliver could see how a truly dedicated cathlete behaves.

As the bird zipped in front of Brother Henry, he lashed out with his right paw. He scored a hit, but was unable to hold on to the bird.

Training the Inner Circle Part II- Anticipate

My Disciples,

As our training session continued, I instructed The Brothers to now anticipate where the bird was going. I said that they should both put their paws into a ready position so they would be prepared to act when the time came. Brother Henry was a natural. He assumed “Squatting Tiger” position and raised a paw as the bird made a close pass.

Training the Inner Circle Part I- Watch

My Disciples,

After yesterday’s interaction with Beatrice, I decided that The Inner Circle of The Cult of Otis needed to start its own secret Catlympic training program. Since Mama Cat has been getting results with her “watch, anticipate, act” training mantra, I decided that we too would follow this pattern. The Brothers and I gathered in the living room, and I signaled to the artificial bird handler to start the session. As the bird started to fly around I said, “All right everyone, for now just watch. Keep your eyes on that bird!” Brother Henry showed intense focus as he sat on top of the cat tree doing as instructed.

Beatrice Plays Coy

My Disciples,

Beatrice stopped by today for some late morning catnip. It was the first time I had seen her since I discovered that she, Thomas and Mama Cat have been holding late night training sessions in the backyard. I said, “Hey B! Long time no see!” To which she replied, “Hey Leader Otis. I…uhhhh..I’ve been around. I’m not sure why we haven’t seen each other lateley…ummmm…weird, huh?”

Beatrice stops by

Beatrice pretended that she hadn’t been keeping unusual hours in recent days.

I looked at Beatrice and said, “Really? You’ve been around? The is weird. It’s been fairly nice recently, so The Brothers and I have been spending most or our time in My Outdoor Domain. If you’ve been around as much as usual, I would think we would have seen you. Are you sure you haven’t been keeping a different schedule or something lately?”

Beatrice responded, “Errrrrr…ummmm…I mean, no. I guess we just must keep missing each other. Like we have bad timing or something. I…” She stopped in the middle of speaking as she was overcome by an enormous yawn.

Beatrice yawns

Beatrice was trying to convince Me that she was keeping normal hours, but an enormous yawn betrayed her.

After she yawned I said, “Wow! That was quite the yawn! Have you been getting enough sleep Beatrice? Has something been keeping you up at night?” She nervously responded, “Uhhhhh…nope. Not me! I’ve been sleeping just as much as always and not doing any sort of strenuous physical activity after the sun goes down. Nope. Not at all. Ummmm…goodbye Leader Otis!” She then hurried off down the alley in the direction of her house.

I found it odd that Beatrice was being so secretive about her training sessions, but perhaps she is just really serious about the upcoming Catlympics. She probably thinks that if The Brothers and I don’t know about the training, we will be less inclined to train ourselves. I guess I’ll just let her think her secret is safe…but that doesn’t mean The Brothers and I won’t start doing some super-secret training of our own. This year’s competition is going to be fierce, and we shall be ready…

Night Mystery Solved

My Disciples,

As darkness began to fall last night, The Brothers and I put a plan in motion to ensure that one of us could be in My Outdoor Domain to document what was going on in our yard when the sun went down. We decided that Brother Oliver should be the one to stay outside since he is the best at taking photos. As the light started to fade, Brother Oliver and I sat in the Outdoor Domain waiting for the Guardians to come and try to herd us in. Meanwhile, Brother Henry was stationed in the living room awaiting My signal. The Guardians arrived right on schedule saying, “All right guys…time to come in.” That was My cue, and I signaled Brother Henry with two quick, loud meows. Continue reading

Mama Cat’s Training Camp- Domino Plays it Safe

My Disciples,

As Mama Cat’s Catlympic training camp continued, it was Domino’s turn to be instructed.  Instead of taking his place on the lawn, Domino jumped up onto a chair and asked Mama if she would mind critiquing his forepaw work.  He rooted his butt firmly in the seat of the chair, reared back and got in his ready position.  Mama Cat asked, “Are you sure you just want to do forepaw work?”  To which Domino replied, “Yes Mama.  I want to make sure I have mastered the basics of bird capture before I work on any fancy moves.”  “Very well…”, Mama Cat said, “…you may begin.  The bird handler moved the bird in Domino’s direction and his paws came up, ready to strike.

Domino wanted to work on his forepaw, bird capture technique. Mama Cat agreed to critique him.

Mama Cat’s Training Camp- The Training of Thomas

My Disciples,

As Mama Cat’s training camp continued, she had Thomas take a turn.  He took his place in the center of the lawn, but he got frightened as the simulated bird made its first pass.  He ran over and hid behind the leg of a chair saying, “Mama Cat!  It’s coming in too fast!  What if it hits me!?  What do I do!?”
