The Guardians Need Us Right Now

Disciples of The Leader Otis,

Brother Henry here.

Ummm… there’s no easy way to say this… one of the Guardians is sick. Sir Thomas, Brother Oliver and I have known something was wrong for a few weeks now as the Guardians have seemed very stressed. In recent days Brother Oliver has been sticking close to them and he discovered that the smaller Guardian has been diagnosed with breast cancer, and that she is having surgery for it on Wednesday, July 15. We are all very worried.

Henry worried

The smaller Guardian is having breast cancer surgery on July 15. We are all worried.

Brother Oliver also discovered that the Guardians have created a new website about the smaller Guardian’s illness called Welcome to Cancer. It will include updates on her progress as she goes through her treatment. I was getting impatient with the Guardians recently because they were hogging the computer when Thomas, Brother O, and I wanted to write new blog posts. Now that I see what they were doing I feel a little guilty for that impatience.

We aren’t sure how much we will be updating the Blog of Otis in the coming weeks. We will probably be needed to snuggle and comfort the Guardian as she recovers from her surgery and whatever treatment will follow. We will return as soon as we are able though and, for those of you on Facebook, Thomas will do his best to continue the Flashback Friday posts.

Even in our absence we hope that you will continue to do all that you can to help make this a world in which every cat is happy, healthy, and safely confined.

Our Wiring Is Bad, But Brother Henry Seems Mostly Good

People and fur people who are Disciples of The Leader Otis,

It’s Thomas. We seem to be having some electrical difficulties here in our Indoor Domain. I wanted to update you all on Brother Henry a few days ago, but the computer keeps turning off all by itself! I heard the Guardians say this is because of a faulty circuit breaker or something. I heard one of them make a phone call to someone called the “landlord” earlier today. They seemed to believe that would help fix the problem. In the meantime, I managed to commandeer the portable computer (the Guardians call it a “laptop”, but I don’t even have a lap…) so I could tell you what was going on.

So, although our wiring is bad, Brother Henry is doing pretty good! He has been eating way more than I have seen him eat in weeks, sometimes downing two full bowls in one sitting! He has also been spending more time sitting in the window instead of under the couch.

Henry in window

Brother Henry is sitting in the window much more than before his surgery.

I do notice that he still has some ouch episodes where he stops eating and runs away from his food bowl, or yawns and then hisses and runs away. I’m hoping that is because he is still recovering from his surgery and not because he has an ongoing sore mouth problem. I guess time will tell.

As the Guardians try to take care of both Brother Henry and the electrical problem, Brother Oliver and I will continue to do our best to keep you updated on what’s going on. Hopefully our posts will be more regular again soon!

Brother Henry Is Home

Disciples of Otis,

Brother Oliver here. Brother Henry returned home this afternoon. He was pretty loopy from the drugs they gave him at the specialty Bad Place, but he seemed to be in good spirits.

Brother Henry even jumped up on the bench under the front window to enjoy a little sunlight!

Bad Stair Day

My Disciples,

I’m having a bad stair day. It happens. Although it’s been quite a while now since I had My Hipsterectomy surgery, I am still recovering. Some days are better than others. On bad stair days, I get a little tired as I climb the stairs and I have to stop to rest. It’s frustrating, as I thought I would be all better by now, but still, I am in a lot less pain than before the surgery so I’m not complaining… much.

Otis bad stair day

I’m having a bad stair day.

Hopefully these bad stair days will become less and less frequent until they are just a memory. In the meantime, I’ll just take My days one step at a time and try My best to keep My head up. And if I’m ever too tired to make it all the way to the top, I’ll rest easy knowing that the Guardians will be along soon to carry Me the rest of the way.

Workin’ It

My Disciples,

All right. I can do this I know I can. Here we go.

Otis self exercise 1

I’m ready to do this. Let’s get this show on the road. And…

Otis self exercise 3

Huh… that wasn’t so bad! My leg’s been stiff after My Hipsterectomy, so I thought that would be harder. Here we go again. And…

Otis self exercise 5

Ha! Ha! Ha! So easy. I could do this all day. My leg will be back in shape in no time. Here we go again. And… wait, what?

Otis self exercise 6

What Brother Oliver? WHAT! I’m exercising the wrong leg? Are you sure? Oh yeah. You’re right. It was My right leg that was surgerized. No wonder this was so easy…

Still Truckin’

My Disciples,

The Guardians are still giving Me regular treat-ments to help Me in My ongoing recovery from My Hipsterectomy. That’s great. I love the Treat-ments. They can keep giving them to Me forever if they would like. What I can do without though is them continuing to combine their own exercise with giving Me what I need! Last night was the same old story. One of the Guardians walked into the living room, held out My treat-ment and called My name. I was excited, of course, so I got on up and walked My limpy butt over there.

Otis PT walk 1

As usual, the Guardian made Me walk over to her for My treat-ment.

I arrived at the Guardian and dutifully took My treat-ment. I thought for a second that this was it, the night she would just give Me all the treat-ments right there instead of combining My healthcare with her nightly walk. But no. She got up, walked to the other side of the room, and held out My next treat-ment. So what could I do? Responsible kitty that I am, I started truckin’ across the living room again to get that next treat-ment. I have to admit though, I was rolling My eyes as I went.

Otis PT walk 2

Back I went, doing My best to avoid looking at the Guardian so she couldn’t see Me rolling My eyes.

Once again I arrived and was given My treat-ment. And now, the Guardian didn’t just get up and cross the room. She went all the way across the room and disappeared into the office. Then, I heard her in there calling My name. From the office! Now I had to go all the way to the office for My treat-ment!? What was that about? I have to tell you, I was not pleased. I even decided that I wasn’t going. Nope. I was just going to sit and wait for her to come back to Me. The way I figured it, I was only doing her a favor because it meant she could get more exercise. That seemed to be what she wanted after all.

Otis PT walk 3

Yep. I was done with the silliness. I would sit and wait for the Guardian to bring My treat-ment back to Me!

Well, that was the plan anyway. After about 10 seconds though I began to worry that My recovery might suffer a setback if I didn’t get that next treat-ment in time. I mean, I definitely didn’t want to jeopardize My recovery! So I got up. I crossed the living room and headed for the office.

Otis PT walk 4

Blast the Guardian! I wasn’t going to let her make Me late for My treat-ment.

I arrived at the Guardian, received My treat-ment and also got a ton of praise and pets, which I knew meant that the session was over. The funny thing was, I could have taken about ten times the treat-ments in the span of time that it had taken Me to down three. All the Guardian would have had to do is just save the walk for later and instead sit in one spot to dole out treat-ment after treat-ment. It’s so simple! Why are humans so difficult sometimes!

My New Treat-ments

My Disciples,

As I continue to recover from My Hipsterectomy, the Guardians are giving Me a nightly combination of stretching and treat-ments. After they eat their dinner, I take up a position on the couch in between them and lay on the Mystical Mat of Toastiness for a while.

Otis physical therapy 1

They usually like Me to lay on My right side, but I also like to toast My left side now and then.

After I have been sufficiently toasted, the bigger Guardian begins to manipulate and stretch My leg, while the other Guardian provides Me with a hefty dose of freeze-dried chicken treat-ment.

Otis physical therapy 2

One Guardian stretches My leg while the other Guardian gives Me treat-ments.

The leg stretching sometimes gets uncomfortable, and I feel like I might want to jump down off the couch, but then a fresh treat-ment is crumbled in front of Me and I forget all about the discomfort. I must have My treat-ment! I admit though, that I might get a little carried away when taking My treat-ments. I sometimes end up looking slightly less than dignified.

Otis physical therapy 3

I love My treat-ments. Maybe a little too much sometimes.

Once the Guardian is done stretching My leg, I spend some quality time with Boo-Boo Buddy Bob. As always, Bob takes the edge off of My soreness. I’m still pretty limpy, but I think the stretches, and especially the continued treat-ments are helping to make My leg less stiff and a little stronger. I bet I’d feel better faster with even more treat-ments though!

Catching Some Rays

My Disciples,

The sun came out very briefly yesterday, and I took the opportunity to soak up a few rays. The warm sunshine felt very nice on my still sparsely furred hindquarter.

Otis sunning himself

The toasty rays felt great on my poorly insulated booty.

I have noticed though that My fur really is starting to grow back. For one thing, I can see My stripes again! It still kind of looks like I’m wearing a furry boot on My foot, but I’m sure the rest of My leg will catch up eventually.

Otis Fur Growing

I can see My stripes again! I’m not going to be naked forever!

The sun didn’t stick around long before the clouds closed back in, but I sure enjoyed it while it lasted.

I’ve also been enjoying all of the photos that have been rolling in for the big Box Day catstravaganza! Thanks to everyone that has contributed so far, and there is still time for those who are planning to contribute. Send your photos to Me by 3pm Pacific time on Dec. 25th and they will be included in the special Box Day post!

The Mystical Blanket of Toastiness

My Disciples,

You may recall that I once performed a successful sneak attack on Brother Oliver to claim the Mystical Mat of Toastiness. Several months later, the Guardians used the Mystical Mat to help soothe My Art Thritis. Well, last night I was laying on the couch with one of the Guardians, resting My head on his leg. Suddenly, the Guardian started to get up. I was quite annoyed as he had not asked permission, but I was pleased when he placed a soft pillow under My head to take the place of his leg. I settled back in and started to fall asleep.

As I laid there dozing, I suddenly felt the most glorious warmth on the back half of My body. I opened My eyes to discover the Guardian had partially covered Me with the Mystical Mat of Toastiness. Apparently it can be used as a blanket of toastiness as well!

Otis under heating pad

The Guardian covered Me with The Mystical Mat/Blanket of Toastiness!

I was laying on My left side, which meant that My right leg was up. That is the leg on which My Hipsterectomy was performed, and the fur is still very short from being shaved. The heat from the Mat/Blanket of Toastiness soaked into My sparsely furred leg, warming Me right to My core. I let out a huge sigh, and began to purr without even realizing it, then I drifted off in toasty, sleepy bliss.

Boo Boo Buddy Bob is the Best!

My Disciples,

I’ve been working hard the past few days, taking all of the treat-ments that the Guardians offer to Me. They are continuing to combine My therapeutic regimen with getting their exercise though, walking to the opposite side of the room after every treat-ment. You would think they would realize that My leg is still weak, and that it is a major hassle for Me to walk to them over and over again. Plus, all this movement is making My recently surgerized leg tired and sore! Luckily, the Guardians must realize this because they have introduced Me to a new friend.

My new friend’s name is Bob, and the Guardians say he is a “Boo Boo Buddy”. I’m not sure exactly what that means, but Bob is a smiling, yellow, squarish fellow who lives in the freezer. When placed on My sore leg, Bob’s soothing coldness takes the edge off My pain.

Boo Boo Buddy Bob

My Boo Boo Buddy Bob reduces My pain with soothing coldness.

I hope Bob sticks around throughout My recovery period, especially if the Guardians keep insisting on getting their exercise during My daily treat-ment sessions. Bob doesn’t say much, but he doesn’t have to. Just having him sit on My hip for a few minutes makes Me feel better. He is really, really cool.
