Squatting Tiger Week: Day 4- Brother Oliver

My Disciples,

We have now seen three takes on the Squatting Tiger pose, but it’s time to add another kitty into the mix. Today, that kitty is Brother Oliver, and he contends that none of the poses we have seen so far were even close to accurate. Brother Oliver says that a squat is when your legs are bent, but your booty is still slightly off of the floor.  Therefore, Brother Henry, Sir Thomas, and Mama Cat were all actually sitting in their photos. He thinks that they should be disqualified for performing Sitting Tigers instead of Squatting Tigers. Here, in his opinion, is how a Squatting Tiger is actually performed:

Oliver true squat

Brother Oliver says that in a true Squatting Tiger, your booty is slightly up off the floor. Otherwise, it’s a Sitting Tiger.

Whoa! Calm down everyone! Sorry, My Disciples. Brother Oliver’s controversial statement about booty placement has caused an argument to break out among the contestants. I’ll try to calm them down. In the meanwhile, ruminate on Brother Oliver’s entry and we’ll be back tomorrow with My entry in this debate.

Squatting Tiger Week: Day 3- Mama Cat

My Disciples,

We have now seen the entries from Brother Henry and Sir Thomas. Today we bring you a third, more feminine take on the Squatting Tiger pose. For those of you who have been with us for awhile, you know what an amazing cathlete Mama Cat is. Her Flying Squirrel, Dragon KickCatmikaze, Super Wheelie, and Power Pounce moves are legendary, so you can imagine how excited we all were to see her interpretation of Squatting Tiger. Without further ado, here’s Mama Cat:

Mama Cat precise squat

Mama Cat says that Squatting Tiger is about balance and precision. It can be done with one or both paws raised, depending on the situation.

You now have 24 hours to consider Mama Cat’s contribution. Tomorrow, Brother Oliver enters the fray with his own version of Squatting Tiger. I can hardly wait to see it!

Squatting Tiger Week: Day 2- Sir Thomas

My Disciples,

Today we bring you Sir Thomas’s take on the Squatting Tiger pose. Sir Thomas contends that there are actually many different ways to do the pose, so he’s not very fussy about technique the way Brother Henry is. His feeling is, as long as you are at least kind of squatting, and channeling your inner tiger, it’s correct. He decided to do his version of Squatting Tiger on the couch.

Thomas couch squat

Sir Thomas says that as long as you are at least partially squatting, and channeling your inner tiger, you are doing Squatting Tiger.

Take another 24 hours to process Sir Thomas’s entry in this debate. Tomorrow we will bring you Mama Cat’s Squatting Tiger submission. We’re all very excited that she agreed to participate!

Squatting Tiger Week: Day 1- Brother Henry

My Disciples,

After yesterday’s stretch-fest, Brother Henry and Sir Thomas got into a minor cat fight about proper stretching technique. Brother Henry insisted that his way of doing things was the best, while Sir Thomas insisted that there are many different ways to achieve the same result. They both tried to drag Brother Oliver, Mama Cat and Myself into the argument, but I decided to propose a more democatic way to resolve the dispute.

So, each day this week, one of us will be performing our own version of the Squatting Tiger pose. At the end of the week, we will ask you, My Disciples, to vote on whose pose you think is the best. We will start with Brother Henry, since he feels that his technique is the one by which all others should be judged. Here he is:

Henry deep squat

Brother Henry says that a deep squat, with both paws raised is the best way to perform the Squatting Tiger.

So, go ahead and study that pose for the next 24 hours. Tomorrow we will bring you Thomas, performing his interpretation of this pose as Squatting Tiger Week continues. Oh, and special thanks to the Guardians for providing the artificial bird handling services for this competition.

An Unexpected Offering From The Guardian

My Disciples,

I was relaxing on the couch with one of the Guardians when something unexpected happened. She offered Me the delivery device from a cup of Guardian Fuel! I sat up, not knowing what she wanted Me to do.

Whiskered Gallantry 5- Flight of the Knight

Disciples of Otis,

Brother Oliver here. As you know, Thomas has been brushing up on his Flying Squirrel move. He had offered to perform the move in the event he won the fundraising competition we started a couple months back. Well, the fundraising push ends today, and it looks like Leader Otis is the winner. Now, I felt kind of bad that Thomas did all that practicing and he didn’t win, so I decided to try to cheer him up. I’m still working with him on my Whiskered Gallantry photo series, and I thought a photo of him performing his Flying Squirrel move would be a perfect addition to the project. We did the photo shoot last night, and I am proud to bring you the resulting image. I call it “Flight of the Knight”.

Whiskered Gallantry #5- Flight of the Knight

There you have it. I gotta say, the kid really impressed me with his amazing control and perfect form. I think he might even be some real competition for Mama Cat if the Catlympics ever come back to town. And I think she’d be happy about that. After all , she taught him everything he knows.

Learning From The Master Part V: Practicing What We Have Learned

My Disciples,

When Brother Oliver left off yesterday, both of The Brothers and Thomas had just headed inside to the living room to practice what Mama Cat had taught them. I’m in no condition yet to participate in cathletic exercises, but I followed them into the living room to observe. At first, it was a little bit embarrassing to watch, actually. All three cats lined up in the living room as the bird handler started doing her thing. On the first pass of the bird, Brother Henry and Thomas did a good job of following Mama Cat’s rules by focusing their attention and just watching it. Brother Oliver though jumped to his feet and shouted, “I’M READY TO ACT!”

Henry, Oliver, Thomas practicing 1

Brother Henry and Thomas got off to a good start, but Brother Oliver wanted to jump straight to act.

Brother Henry chastised Brother Oliver, saying, “No, no, no, Brother Oliver! First we watch…”, Brother Henry suddenly propelled himself forward and completed his sentence with, “… then we ACT!”

Henry, Oliver, Thomas practicing 2

Brother Henry chastised Brother Oliver, but then made a mistake himself.

Brother Henry missed the bird by a mile, and Brother Oliver snickered a little. Thomas, who had been keeping his eye on the bird the whole time, said, “You’re both wrong! We watch… anticipate… and only then do we…”, Thomas launched himself forward in a perfect Power Pounce. He pinned the artificial bird with his paws and then said softly, “… act”.

Henry, Oliver, Thomas practicing 3

Thomas showed The Brothers how it is done.

Upon seeing Thomas’s impressive display, both of The Brothers said, “WHOOOOOOOOOA!” in unison. After a few moments of silence, Brother Henry said, “Very impressive Thomas, but watch this.” He then awkwardly launched himself upward with a cry of “Flying Squirrel!”

Henry's Flying Squirrel

Brother Henry tried to do a Flying Squirrel. It wasn’t very impressive.

As Brother Henry landed, Brother Oliver and Thomas both burst out laughing. Sheepishly, Brother Henry joined them. When the laughter died down, Thomas said, “Good effort Brother Henry, but I think Mama Cat was right when she said we should learn to walk before we fly. Shall we get back to working on the basics now?” Both Brothers Henry and Oliver agreed with Thomas, and the three of them spent the rest of the training session watching, anticipating, and acting. I can’t say that I expect them to reach Mama Cat’s level of cathletic prowess, but I definitely saw them getting better, especially Thomas. That little kitty has some definite potential! Who knows, maybe he will be our next Catlympic champion. Only time will tell.

Learning From The Master Part IV: Some Trouble With Training

Disciples of Otis,

Brother Oliver here, taking over for Thomas. When we left off, Mama Cat had just chastised Brother Henry and me for wanting to fly before we learned how to walk. She then showed us a Flying Squirrel and told us it was time for us to practice. Thomas got ready by the door and the bird handler moved the bird toward him. He started by watching and anticipating.

Thomas trying to practice 1

Thomas tried to put what we had learned into practice. He watched and anticipated…

When it came time to act, Thomas ran into a problem. The wire door was in his way.

Thomas trying to practice 2

Thomas tried to act, but the wire door was in his way.

Brother Henry tried to help by moving over and saying, “Hey Thomas! Try grabbing it with your paw through the wire, and then pulling it in!” Thomas took the advice, and on the next pass of the bird, he snagged it with one claw.

Thomas trying to practice 3

Brother Henry told Thomas to try snagging the bird with his claw. He did.

When Thomas tried to pull the bird through the wire though, he had trouble getting it into his mouth. He was becoming visibly frustrated.

Thomas had difficulty pulling the bird through the wire. He was getting frustrated.

At this point I suggested that we all go inside to practice in the living room. Brother Henry said, “But Mama Cat won’t be able to critique us if she can’t see us!” Mama Cat replied, “True, Brother Henry, but you don’t have enough room in The Leader’s Outdoor Domain to properly try the techniques I have demonstrated. You all saw my demonstration, so you should be able to critique each other just fine.” We all thanked Mama Cat for her invaluable instruction, and then we headed off to the living room. The bird handler obediently followed.

Learning From The Master Part III: Advanced Techniques

People and fur people who like The Leader Otis,

It’s Thomas. When we left off yesterday, Mama Cat had just taken us through the catlympic basics, and she was about to move on to some advanced techniques. The Brothers and I eagerly awaited the next lesson. Mama cat said, “OK, now, as we move into the more complicated moves, remember that I am still working on the basic principles of ‘watch, anticipate, act’. Always, ALWAYS keep those basics in mind, even if you are preparing to execute a crazy move like…” In mid-sentence, Mama cat took off across the yard in a run.

Mama Cat running

In mid-sentence, Mama Cat tore off across the yard.

Mama Cat moved like lighting. Even while she had been talking to us, she must have been watching the artificial bird and anticipating where it was going. She covered about 10 feet in half a second, and then launched herself into the air, completing her interrupted sentence with a shout of “CATMIKAZE!!!”

Mama Cat doing a Catmikaze with a twist

Mama Cat ran across the yard and executed a breathtaking Catmikaze. She even added a twist at the end.

The Brothers and I let out a series of appreciative yowls and jumped all around. After we settled back down, Mama Cat said, “Thank you! Thank you! Now, boys, I don’t expect you to be pulling off Catmikazes with a twist right from the start, so let me show you how you can safely practice the Catmikaze. Watch closely.” As the bird handler drew the bird in close to Mama Cat, she got into position to intercept it. She then pulled off another Catmikaze, but she kept one hind leg on the ground while she did it.

Mama Cat showed us how to practice a Catmikaze safely.

As Mama Cat returned all four paws to the ground, she said, “See? By keeping one foot on the ground, I was able to practice proper body positioning without running the risk of a back or belly flop. Let me show you again, this time adding in the twist.” On the next pass of the bird, Mama again performed a Catmikaze with one paw on the ground, but this time she rotated her body to the right to add the twist. I watched carefully, taking mental notes.

Next Mama Cat showed how to practice the Catmikaze with a twist. I watched closely.

While Mama Cat was showing us how to practice Catmikazes, Brothers Henry and Oliver seemed distracted. They were talking softly to one another instead of paying attention. Mama Cat said, “Excuse me boys. Is there something you would like to share with the rest of the class?” Feeling a little embarrassed for having been called out for not paying attention, Brother Henry said, “I’m sorry Mama. Brother Oliver and I were just discussing how we were hoping you would teach us how to do the Flying Squirrel move. The Catmikaze is exciting, but the Flying Squirrel is the ultimate feat of cathleticism.” To this Mama replied, “That’s right Brother Henry, it is, but don’t you think you should learn to walk before I teach you to fly? I’ll tell you what, I won’t teach you the Flying Squirrel today because I think you should perfect the Catmikaze first, but I will do a quick Flying Squirrel just so you can see how it’s done. Deal?” Brothers Henry and Oliver said in unison, “YES! THANKS MAMA!” Keeping her word, Mama made a short run and executed a perfect Flying Squirrel.

Mama Cat doing a Flying Squirrel

Mama Cat executed a perfect Flying Squirrel to satisfy The Brothers.

After The Brothers’ excitement had died down, Mama Cat said, “OK. That’s enough for today. I think you three should now work on what I have taught you.” Mama Cat then wandered over and jumped up on the chair in the Mama Snuggle Shack 3000, which indicated to the bird handler that she was done. I moved right up to the wire on the door to The Leader’s Outdoor Domain, indicating to the bird handler that I wanted a turn. The handler complied, and I tried to practice what I had just learned.

Learning From The Master Part II: Reviewing The Basics

People and fur people who like The Leader Otis,

It’s Thomas. When we left off yesterday, The Brothers and I had just found out that it was Mama Cat that summoned us to the Outdoor Domain. She wanted to run us through some catlympic training exercises. After The Brothers and I finished jumping around and yowling with happiness, we settled in to watch. I sat on the step so I would have a front row seat, while The Brothers sat up higher for a crunchy bird’s-eye view. Mama strutted over and got into position.
