The Tragedy Of EB

People and fur people who are Disciples of The Leader Otis,

It’s Thomas.

This is a sensitive topic, but one that I think is very important. Not many kitties talk about this openly, but as a relative newcomer to the phenomenon, I feel like the more we talk about this, the more likely it will be that we can find a cure. In case you do not know what I am talking about, let me show you.

Thomas EB 1

It starts out innocently enough. You want to be brushed and your Guardian does as you silently command.

I Expect Punctuality!

People and Fur People who are Disciples of Otis,

It’s Thomas.

As you know, I am mostly not OK with being touched by humans. There are exceptions to this though. Once each morning and once each evening, right after he has finished brushing his teeth, I allow the bigger Guardian to pet and brush me in Kitty Valhalla. I don’t ask for much. I simply require that he climb the stairs in a certain way, sit down in the same exact spot every time, and wait for me to approach him. If he does as is required, he will be rewarded with anywhere from three to eight minutes of brushing/petting time. If he deviates at all from the required routine I assume he is probably planning to kill me or something so I get the heck out of there.

Anyway, the Guardian has been very good about complying with my requirements, but the one thing he is bad at is punctuality. And I am very lenient. I usually give him a full five seconds from the time I hear the electric toothbrush turn off to report for duty. This morning though, nearly eleven seconds elapsed after the toothbrush noise ceased before the Guardian appeared at the bottom of the stairs. I made it crystal clear that I was not pleased..

Thomas displeased

I was not pleased with the Guardian’s tardiness, and I made it clear.

When You Want Something Done Right…

My Disciples,

The other day I was… wait… oh! It’s brushing time, Guardian? OK.

Otis with brush 1

Awwww yeah. That’s right. Brush that cheek!

Otis with brush 2

Nice! Keep brushing… no… wait.. what are you doing? You’re doing it wrong. YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG!

Otis with brush 3

Give me that thing! Here, after you brush one cheek you have to brush the other. Let me… just… get this… under my head.

Otis with brush 4

There. See! Now I’m brushing this cheek so everything is evened out. Only after brushing both cheeks can you proceed to brush other areas of the body. I would think you would know this by now!

Otis with brush 5

OK. I’ll finish up here. You go get Me a snack. Or do I have to do that for Myself too?

Oh! Disciples! You’re still here!? Sorry you had to see that. I, uh. Well, sometimes, when you want something done right you just have to do it yourself. Ummmm… OK… don’t tell the Guardians, but they were really brushing Me just fine. The only reason I took the brush away was because I wanted to free them up to go get My snacks. See, sometimes when you want something done right, you have to get someone else to do it… especially if you don’t have thumbs.

Cleanliness is Next to Catliness

Disciples of Otis,

Brother Oliver here. Leader Otis is getting back quite a bit of his old spunk, much to the Guardians’ delight. It’s been very tough for the Leader having to wear that bulky collar though, and one of the main reasons it’s been hard is because it makes it impossible for Him to groom Himself. Recovering from major surgery or not, no kitty likes to be dirty! Fortunately, the Guardians really seem to understand this. Whenever they can, they take the Leader’s collar off and allow Him to groom. they sit right there with Him, and don’t let Him get anywhere near his surgery site, but they let Him clean everywhere else. It really seems to raise His spirits!

Otis grooming

The Guardians allow Leader Otis to groom, but only under close supervision.

Not only do they make sure He gets the time He needs to groom Himself, they help Him out by giving Him regular brushings. The Leader seems to especially like having His cheeks brushed.

The Leader loves to be brushed, especially on the cheeks.

Usually, shortly after the brushing starts, Leader Otis takes ahold of the brush and begins brushing Himself. The Guardians end up just holding the brush in place while The Leader does most of the work.

The Leader usually takes over the brushing sessions and does most of the work Himself.

Eventually, Leader Otis gets completely lost in the brush, hugging it to his body and pulling it away from the Guardian.

Otis hugging brush 1

Leader Otis completely loses Himself in the brushing and begins to hug the brush.

This seems to give Him more relief than did the clear medicine the Guardians were giving him last week. He falls into a blessed-out trance where nothing exists except Him and the brush.

Leader Otis completely becomes one with the Brush.

So, with supervised grooming and regular brush therapy, Leader Otis is staying nice and clean throughout His post-surgery ordeal. Now, if the Guardians can just convince Him that He still needs to mostly sit still! This next week could be a long one around here…
