Disciples of Otis,
Brother Oliver here.
I walked into the living room a few days ago and Brother Henry called me over to him. He motioned to the couch and said, “Brother O! Check this out!” When I looked in the direction Brother Henry had indicated, I saw Thomas sitting on the ottoman at the end of the couch. He was sitting just a few inches away from the smaller Guardian and he was staring at her!
I asked Brother Henry what he thought was going on and he said, “I’m not entirely sure, but I think the kid is going through some changes. I didn’t tell you what happened last night, did I?” When I told Brother Henry that he had not he said, “Well, I was napping on the couch and the smaller Guardian was sitting at the far end with that white blanket that we sometimes let her borrow. I was suddenly awakened when the couch shook as someone else jumped onto it. I opened my eye just a crack and I saw that it was Thomas. He was sitting on the couch right next to the Guardian! Her legs were covered by the white blanket, and Thomas was almost leaning up against one of them!”
I gasped, almost unable to believe what I was hearing. I said, “Do you think Thomas realized the Guardian was there?” Brother Henry replied, “I wondered the same thing, so I calmly said to him, ‘Thomas… do you know you are right next to the Guardian’s leg?’, and he looked over at the Guardian and said, ‘Yes, Brother Henry, I know.’ He then just continued to sit there!”
My mind still reeling a bit from this news, I turned to Brother Henry and said, “Hmmmm… you know, I’ve noticed that Sir T has been allowing both Guardians to pet and brush him at his special spot on the back stairs recently. He used to only let one of them pet or brush him, once in the morning and once in the evening. Now he’s letting both of them do it at almost any time of day!” Brother Henry said, “I’ve noticed that too! He really does seem to be changing recently. What do you think it all means, Brother Oliver?” I said, “Well, my guess is that Sir Thomas is finally starting to slay some of his most persistent inner demons. He’s been with us here in The Promised Land for over two years now and he’s finally starting to realize he’s here to stay… we are finally starting to see it…” Brother Henry said, “Ahhhhh… I think you’re right… we’re finally starting to see more of his True Spirit shine through!”
Brother Henry and I looked a Thomas for a few more moments, and then we turned to one another and shared a smile. We both felt very proud of our resident knight and the bravery he was exhibiting. As Brother Henry and I turned to leave the room he said, “Hmmm… do you think this means he might also be letting go of his fear of wiener dogs?” Barely containing my laughter I replied, “Not a chance…”
So Sayeth Brother Oliver
I would give this one 10 stars if I could. Thank you!
Inch by inch. Smiles
And a beautiful True Spirit it is. Much happiness.
He could never have stayed those dragons without your help, Brothers Oliver & Henry!
This is such wonderful news! My Bessie has been with me for 3.5 years now and it took her 3 years and 2 months to let me pet her. Could only touch her tail, and that was after 2 years. It’s the greatest thing when the change happens. Bess now happily sleeps next to me in bed, sometimes even on the pillow! She also asks for pets and scratches (even a few belly rubs!), and nuzzles her face next to mine. It’s quite a change from the rescue kitty who would not let me touch her AT ALL, despite her clear affection for me (purring and talking, approaching me, playing, and sleeping on the bench at the foot of my bed). Next: picking her up…Thomas, will that happen? Purrs to all of you, I think with the Guardians patience and Brother Oliver and Henry, Sir Thomas has been able to trust!
made me smile out loud 🙂

Everything just got a little sunnier over here : )
p.s. ‘using the white blanket that we sometimes let her borrow’ (LOL)
Love love love this! So proud of Thomas! I’ve been waiting and waiting for something like this with him, so much so that it almost makes me want to get teary eyed! But I’m going to save those for the day when he finally sits on a guardian lap! It’ll happen, I just know it!
We are very proud of you Sir Thomas
I loved reading this post! One of my girls is a former feral, she’s been with me for about 3.5 years now and although she still hates to be held, hugged or kissed she will curl up in the crook of my knees, often with her front paws resting on me. However, a couple of weeks ago she climbed 90% into my lap and, as anyone who’s had a reticent kitty knows, it was one of the most thrilling experiences ever! Yay for Sir T also realizing guardians can be useful snuggle companions!
Good for you Thomas!
And another demon bites the dust!!! Hooray Sir T!!! You’re on your way to many happy belly rubs!
What a great post!
We are all smiles!
Have a great weekend…
Noodle and crew
How wonderful!
Woo hoo happy dance!!
Our Kaspars is a former feral and it took 8 yrs before he would join me in bed to snuggle or allow his belly rubbed- 2 things I thought I would never see! It is indeed heartwarming to see them make these strides over their demons. Clove was not feral but was abused and has severe trust issues. To see her yearn to trust 100% and her true spirit showing through more and more each day melts my heart. She will not sit in my lap, be picked up or touched with more than one hand at a time, but I have faith that with patience and unconditional love those fears will become a thing of the past. Sir Thomas is lucky to have the understanding, unconditional love and support from you boys, The Guardians and of course Mama Cat and the wise warrior of them all- Leader Otis. Rock on Sir Thomas, your true spirit shines! (Having a bit of awareness for those Weiner dogs isn’t necessarily a bad thing, we all have our own weiner dog uprising type fears. I myself have never trusted clowns!
Hurrah Sir Thomas…Nylablue would be so so proud of you!!!!!
Little by little you will overcome the demons…we are sure of it.
