It’s Samuel Sunday!

People and furry people who like The Leader Otis,

It’s Thomas. Brother Oliver told me to write today’s blog. He said it is Samuel Sunday, named after a famous American writer named Samuel Clemens. Oh, and Brother Oliver said he also called himself Mark Twain. Anyway, Brother Oliver said this Samuel, or Mark person really liked cats, and he had crazy hair and a super whiskery face. Brother Oliver thinks that I have the craziest hair and whiskeriest face in the house, so it should be me that writes the Samuel Sunday post.

Thomas Twain

Brother Oliver says I should write about Samuel Twain, or Mark Clemens, or whatever, because I have crazy hair and whiskers like he did. I don’t see the resemblance.

OK, so how do we know that Samuel Clemens liked cats? Well, he talked about how great they were all the time! Here are a few quotes to give you some examples:

“Some people scorn a cat and think it not an essential; but the Clemens tribe are not of these”
– quoted in “UC’s Bancroft Library celebrating Mark Twain,” San Francisco Chronicle, Oct. 2, 2008.

“When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade, without further introduction.”
– from “An Incident,” in the book Who Is Mark Twain?

“I simply can’t resist a cat, particularly a purring one. They are the cleanest, cunningest, and most intelligent things I know, outside of the girl you love, of course.”
– quoted in Abroad with Mark Twain and Eugene Field, Fisher

That last quote especially shows that, not only did Mark Twain love cats, he was also a total genius! I am happy to declare today Samuel Sunday in honor of this amazingly enlightened human!

  1. Our favorite Mark Twain quote is: “If man could be crossed with a cat, it would improve man but deteriorate the cat.” That Mark Twain was a smart guy.

My favorite (and is over my desk) is:
You may say a cat uses good grammar. Well, a cat does — but you let a cat get excited once; you let a cat get to pulling fur with another cat on a shed, nights, and you’ll hear grammar that will give you the lockjaw. Ignorant people think it’s the noise which fighting cats make that is so aggravating, but it ain’t so; it’s the sickening grammar they use.

  3. Good job, Thomas! We think Samuel Sunday is a good idea! And that you’re far too cute to say you have crazy hair..

  4. Hey Thomas, good job on the post. Samuel was a cool dude!

I knew Mark Twain was my favorite American author for a reason. Excellent post, Thomas!

My Human is an English teacher and in her office she has a little sign a friend gave her that reads: If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate* the cat. –Mark Twain

(*The Human would not like to correct Mr. Twain, but she does wonder about this use of deteriorate as a transitive verb, ha ha ha!)

  8. That Mark Twain fellow was a wise man!!!
